Having been brought up in a brass banding family, Richard began playing the cornet at the age of 9. He joined the Hatfield Band as third cornet, and progressed through the cornet ranks to became Principal Cornet at the age of 11.
Richard is currently the longest serving Principal Cornet of the Black Dyke Band, a position that is heralded as the ‘hottest seat in banding’. Previously Principal Cornet for ten years with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Richard moved to Black Dyke in January 2006.
Richard is a Geneva Performance & Development Artist and performs exclusively on the Geneva Cardinal Cornet in silver.
